Hundreds of charities, academics and health organisations are calling on all major political parties to commit to a boost in investment to improve children’s mental health and wellbeing ahead of next year’s general election.

They want to see a commitment of “at least” £1.7bn extra funding a year to improve mental health from babies to young people up to the age of 25.

The call has come from the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Coalition, which represents the views of 270 organisations, including the National Children’s Bureau, Young Minds, British Youth Council and the British Psychological Society.

There also needs to be a focus on mental health and wellbeing across all schools, colleges, and universities, according to the coalition.

Another recommendation for all political parties is for early intervention support in the community to be ramped up through a national roll out of early support hubs.
