Children's voices must not be lost in family justice overhaul, warns Cafcass chief

Radical plans to change the family justice system must not endanger the service children and families receive, the head of Cafcass has said.

Responding to proposals to reform the system outlined in the interim report of the Family Justice Review panel, Cafcass has backed key changes, including the introduction of six-month time limits on cases, in its response to proposals to reform the system.

But Cafcass chief executive Anthony Douglas said reforms must not be to the detriment of cases going through the system, adding that it is vital Cafcass continues to look after the interests of children in court proceedings.

"Further reform of the entire system is unarguable but this must be right from the child’s perspective and carefully planned – any changes to the family justice system must make a positive difference to children," Douglas said.
