Children's Society urges rethink of potentially 'damaging' welfare reforms

1 min read Early Years
The Children's Society is the latest group to unveil evidence claiming vulnerable families will be worse off and have less incentive to work under the government's welfare reforms.

Its research claims that the poorest families with two or more children will lose help with childcare costs under the universal credit system that is being planned through the Welfare Reform Bill.

The research says families with two or more children can currently recoup up to 95.5 per cent of the first £300 spent on childcare through current benefits and tax credits.

But under proposals put forward by the government those with two children would only be able to claim back 80 per cent of £150 spent on childcare or just 70 per cent of costs above £210.

The Children’s Society also rejects claims by Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith that the welfare reforms will "make work pay".
