Children's services spend to increase by £106m this year

Total local authority spending on children and young people's services will increase by more than £100m this year, Department for Education (DfE) statistics have shown.

Latest figures show that gross spend on services will come to £8,587m in 2012/13 compared to £8,481m in 2011/12, a rise of £106m.

The increase in spending comes despite income levels that authorities can offset against expenditure, such as charges paid by parents, private funding and other local authority fees, dropping year-on-year.

In 2011/12, income came to £1,442m but has fallen to £665m this year.

Individual service areas showing an overall gross spending increase across all local authorities included fostering services, and children’s social work.

Gross spend on fostering services increased from £1,284m to £1,339m, while social work spend went from £1,572m to £1,631m.
