England will get a national play strategy, ministers have announced.

The strategy, long fought for by play organisations, will include plans to help up to 4,000 play workers gain recognised qualifications and train up graduate play leaders.

The Children’s Plan also pledged £225m for play over the next three years.

This money will be given to local authorities to spend on rebuilding playgrounds and making them accessible to disabled children.

Up to 30 supervised play park pilots will be launched. These will target eight- to 13-year-olds in disadvantaged areas.

A further 30 pilot projects will take place to test innovative approaches to promoting and supporting play spaces.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families will also work with the Department of Communities and Local Government to examine how planning rules can be changed to improve the quality of play spaces.

Town planners and highways officers will receive training to help them ensure new housing developments, including eco-towns, provide child-friendly spaces.

Adrian Voce, director of Play England, praised the plans.

“This announcement will come as a great boost to local authorities and communities,” he said.
