Children's homes providers face £500k bill for new quality standards

Government proposals to introduce new quality standards in children's homes would significantly drive up costs for providers, it has emerged.

An official study into the impact of the introduction of nine new quality standards for children’s homes, the details of which were announced by children’s minister Edward Timpson last September, reveals that the initial cost of transitioning to the new system will cost an estimated £6.7m.

In addition to this the study predicts there will be ongoing annual costs of around £84,000 a year for businesses – mainly due to stricter fitness of owner tests.

Although there are predicted benefits of the changes of £180,000 a year – the study estimates the overall annual costs will far outweigh this, leaving each of the distinct 471 providers out of pocket to the tune of £530,000 annually.
