Children's charities give coalition government cautious welcome

2 mins read Early Years
Children's charities have expressed optimism about the opportunities that the new coalition government could provide.

Under the newly-formed government of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, the sector believes that a coalition could champion a new form of governing, one which embraces the merits of working together.

National Children's Bureau chief executive Sir Paul Ennals said: "The creation of a coalition government provides some real opportunities for the children's and youth sector. The coalition will be revisiting many of the policies set out in the manifestos, and any anxieties we might have had with some individual policies can now be revisited."

Daycare Trust chief executive Alison Garnham claimed the new coalition will alter the way in which the childcare sector interacts with government.

"We will need to adjust to a different way of working now one party no longer has a large majority — and it will be more important than ever that the sector works with all parties," she said.

Robert Tapsfield, chief exceutive of the Fostering Network, added: "We hope the coalition government of Liberal Democrats and Conservatives will prove to be good news for children in care."
