Children's authors join campaign to end immigrant detention

More than 60 children's authors and illustrators have signed a letter to the Prime Minister condemning the detention of asylum-seeking children.

Jacqueline Wilson, Quentin Blake, Michael Rosen and Julia Donaldson are among the writers and illustrators who have signed a letter to Gordon Brown supporting calls by doctors’ groups for the immediate cessation of the detention of children.

Rosen, former Children’s Laureate, said: "I call on every single person who hears of what's going on with the detention of asylum-seeking children to write, petition and demonstrate against it."

After visiting children in Yarl’s Wood Detention Centre, writer Beverley Naidoo said: "We spent a morning with delightful, thoughtful young people, which brings home the fact that our government should not be asking Serco to lock up innocent children."
