According to the research, in the year 2022/23, there were a total of 3,039 permanent exclusions at a rate of 0.04 for all school-age children.
Children with SEND faced a higher exclusion rate than their non-SEN peers. The data shows that those with an education, health and care plan (EHCP) were excluded at a rate of 0.7, compared with a rate of 0.2 for pupils without SEND.
Anne Longfield, executive chair of the Centre for Young Lives and former Children’s Commissioner for England , said: “We should be extremely concerned at the disproportionate number of children with special educational neds who are being excluded from school.
