Children with autism face postcode lottery

1 min read Health
The age by which children are diagnosed with autism varies depending on where they live, according to research published on World Autism Awareness Day.

A study by national autism education charity TreeHouse said parents of children with autism face a "postcode lottery" when it comes to the quality of services available to their child.

A freedom of information request submitted by the charity to local authorities around the UK revealed that the average age of diagnosis ranges from under three years old in some areas to over seven in others.

TreeHouse says diagnosis before the age of three is vital in order to ensure children get access to the necessary education as early as possible as it can make a "dramatic difference to a child realising their potential".
