In the first wave of the children of the 2020s study, funded by the Department for Education, thousands of letters have been sent to families with nine-month-old babies randomly selected from HMRC Child Benefit records, inviting them to take part.
Approximately 8,500 babies have been recruited, with “boosted representation” of babies from disadvantaged backgrounds, the University College London (UCL) website states.
Face-to-face interviews with representatives from UCL, who are leading the research, will take place from next week, to answer questions about the child’s development, family circumstances and their own lives.
The study, which will follow children during the first five years of their lives, and potentially beyond, aims to shed new light on the factors that can influence their development in the early years.
