Children plunged into 'severe poverty' by asylum benefit system

Thousands of children are being forced into severe poverty because of alarmingly low levels of support for them and their families, a parliamentary inquiry has found.

The report of the cross-party parliamentary inquiry into asylum support for children and young people found evidence of families living on such low levels of support that they struggled to feed themselves.

It details how some of those on the very lowest rate of support are paid their financial allowances on “cashless” cards, leaving them without money to pay for a bus fare to medical appointments or to take their children to school.

The report makes a series of recommendations to government, calling on ministers to ensure that asylum support for all children is brought into line with mainstream benefits, and for an end to the “cashless” system.
