Children living in jobless households on the rise

Social Care
The number of children who live in households with no working adult has risen by 170,000 to 1.9m in the period from April to June 2009.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics found that households with unemployed adults have increased by 1.1 percent.

Colette Marshall, director of UK programmes for Save the Children, said: "These figures highlight the critical need for an adequate safety net for children. Families in poverty are struggling to pay their heating bills in order to fund their children's school uniforms and books."

Jobless households have soared by 240,000 to 3.30m, compared with a year earlier.

Marshall said a better benefit system was needed to support children living in workless households.
