Children deserve an education ‘fit for the future’, says Labour leader

No young person will leave school without the qualifications and life skills they need for the modern economy if Labour wins the next general election, party leader Keir Starmer has pledged.

In a speech to delegates at the Labour party conference in Brighton at the weekend, Starmer set out plans to ensure all children would leave school “job-ready and life-ready”.  

Education policy announcements included reforms to the curriculum, to citizenship teaching, and support for disadvantaged young people.

Starmer said the work would start with a £250m cash boost to councils to re-engage 65,000 16- and 17-year-olds not in education, employment or training (NEET).

Changes to statutory citizenship programmes, within the national curriculum, would include practical life skills essential for young people to understand employment and buy or rent property, he added.
