Children continue to be jailed too far from home

1 min read Youth Justice
Children being jailed too far from home is an ongoing issue in young offender institutions (YOIs) the chief inspector of prisons has said.

In her annual report, Dame Anne Owers described the situation as a ‘major problem' citing the example of Eastwood Park YOI where all young women are held more than 100 miles from home.

Owers also outlined ongoing concerns over the provision of social workers in young offender institutions.

Only half the 25 posts created were filled at the end of 2009 because of a lack of reliable funding.

Under-developed relationships between YOIs and local safeguarding children boards was another concern, while only two of the nine establishments inspected last year ensured that all staff were CRB checked.
