Childminders deemed key to two-year-old offer

Councils should do more to recruit and support childminders in order to boost places for the free childcare entitlement for two-year-olds, a government report recommends.

The Department for Education report highlights the lessons from the 10 local authorities that piloted the offer and notes that “expanding the childminding sector was a key strategy” for increasing the supply of childcare places.

It suggests that local authorities work with Jobcentre Plus, local colleges and the voluntary sector to encourage unemployed people to train as childcare workers, and highlights how Cornwall County Council and Jobcentre Plus founded an academy for this purpose.

The report also recommends that councils foster local childminding networks and offer weekend and evening advice sessions to childminders to help them improve the quality of their provision.
