Childcare providers feel shut out from policy consultation

Childcare providers have been sidelined in the development of the government's early years policy, according to leading representatives in the sector.

As the government prepares to publish its early years policy statement, Neil Leitch, chief executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance, has warned that ministers run the risk of leaving holes in the strategy for early intervention and early years provision.

Leitch said that while he is confident of the government's commitment to the early years, ministers have made a mistake by overlooking key organisations on the main steering committee for its early years strategy.

"Anyone who knows (children's minister) Sarah Teather knows that it isn't just rhetoric and that she is absolutely committed to early intervention," Leitch said. "But it seems at odds to have a situation where membership organisations that clearly speak on behalf of the vast majority of providers out there have not been given productive recognition.
