Childcare costs up by a third since 2010, study finds

2 mins read Early Years
The annual cost of part-time childcare for a child under two has risen by more than £1,500 since 2010, a report by The Family and Childcare Trust has found.

The study, Counting the Cost, found that across Britain it now costs an average of £6,003 a year for a 25-hour a week part-time nursery place - the equivalent of £115.45 a week.

That represents a 5.1 per cent rise on last year, and a rise of 33 per cent since 2010.

Researchers found that for the first time outside of London, some of the very lowest-income parents, who claim help with childcare costs through working tax credits, are left out of pocket if they choose to work.

The study found that the maximum amount they can claim - £175 a week - did not cover their part-time childcare costs, potentially leaving them out of pocket by more than £50 a week.
