Childcare charity sets out demands for future government

1 min read Early Years
A future government must reduce shortfalls in funding for the provision of free childcare and make a long-term commitment to workforce development, according to the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA).

The recommendations are made in a 10-point plan published today in anticipation of a general election next year. In the plan, the NDNA calls for the government to fully assess the cost of improving qualifications in the sector, to make targets achievable and funding for training accessible.

It also recommends cutting down on the amount of administration required from providers delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage. The NDNA also requests that distribution of government funding for parents and providers should be simplified, while providers should have their costs met when delivering free childcare.

"The plan sets out the steps we need government to action so that they can deliver high-quality, affordable and sustainable childcare and early learning for families," said Purnima Tanuku, NDNA’s chief executive. "This includes ensuring that there are no cuts in early years budgets as this investment offers one of the biggest returns."

Other recommendations include ensuring providers are properly equipped to deal with safeguarding issues, and improving partnerships across all forms of childcare provision, with children’s centres as hubs for services.
