Charter offers employers a guide to quality work placements

1 min read Education Youth Work
A charter aimed at boosting the quality of work experience for young people is urging employers not to use placements as an opportunity to fill vacancies for free.

Published by the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development, the Work Experience Quality Charter, stipulates that young people are given clear instructions as to how they will be supported, supervised and mentored in any placement.

It calls on employers to manage young people's expectations of what the work experience will entail and suggests that placements should be tailored to the needs and career aspirations of individual young people.

The charter states that while a young person should be treated as an active member of staff, the placement should not be used to fill a vacancy.

Employers are also encouraged to celebrate the successes of young people and offer honest feedback about what went well and what areas should be improved.
