Charity urges volunteers to accommodate homeless young people

Volunteers are being sought to offer homeless young people accommodation in the capital.

Youth homelessness charity Depaul UK has launched a volunteer-based scheme to help young people move off London streets.

In reaction to an eight per cent rise in homelessness in the capital over the past year, the charity is calling for volunteers to offer accommodation to young people in need of a place to sleep.

On top of lodging, each young person will have a weekly appointment with a trained youth worker.

Project co-ordinator Meghan Read said: "Each session will be delivered using accredited key-working tools with measurable aims and outcomes."

Hosts will receive a weekly rent based on local housing allowance rates, as well as variable support costs depending on how vulnerable their guest is. Read added: "It all depends on how much of their time is needed to help the young person they’re welcoming."
