Charity slams NHS bill of rights for ignoring children

Health
A cancer charity has criticised the new NHS constitution for ignoring children, and called for a children's version to be published.

The document, which was signed earlier this week by Prime Minister Gordon Brown at a ceremony in Downing Street, is a collection of legal rights and responsibilities to be upheld by both patients and practitioners.

The constitution says it applies to everyone, including children and young people. But Dr Carole Easton, chief executive of CLIC Sargent, said: "The constitution does nothing to ensure that children are able to be fully involved in any decisions affecting their lives."

She added: "Children have rights and responsibilities too and it is time children and young people were given the rights they deserve."

CLIC Sargent also called for the publication of the government's long-awaited Child Health Strategy which still has not had a date set.
