Charity downturn money should be distributed locally

1 min read Youth Work
Government funding to help charities through the economic downturn should be funneled through local infrastructure organisations, according to the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services.

Faiza Chaudary, head of policy and communications at NCVYS, said directing the £42.5m pledged by the Office of the Third Sector to help charities assisting people affected by the economic downturn towards infrastructure bodies would ensure the money was used effectively.

"We would want this money to be geared towards infrastructure organisations as that is the only meaningful way to engage smaller voluntary organisations," she said.

"The money is helpful as people may turn to us more as a result of the economic downturn and we will need funding in the sector to help bolster capacity."

She added that the downturn would have "huge social implications".
