Charities set to take over youth services in Croydon

Croydon Council wants charities to deliver some of its early intervention and youth services in a bid to stave off having to close provision.

The London borough wants voluntary and community sector organisations to use its five youth hubs as their own bases, providing support, advice and other services to families instead of the local authority acting as a direct provider.

The proposal was put forward as part of a plan to save £760,000 from the Conservative-controlled council's early intervention and youth services budgets, which it says need to be found to offset a £3.6m rise in spending on children in care.

The local authority has merged the youth work and early intervention services to try to cut costs, in the process reducing the number of senior managers from 14 to six.
