Chair for government's care and health body named

The chief executive of The Environment Agency will chair the government's giant care and health watchdog.
Baroness Young of Old Scone, Barbara Young, will lead the Care Quality Commission. This is expected to take over from the Commission for Social Care Inspection, the Healthcare Commission, and the Mental Health Act Commission.

The creation of the new body is subject to legislation currently going through Parliament, and if it gets the go-ahead will operate from 1 April 2009.

The government has asked the Health Select Committee to carry out an inquiry into Young's suitability for the post before the appointment is confirmed. She will stand down from her current job to take the new appointment.
