Centrepoint in talks over pay cuts and redundancies

Redundancies and pay cuts are being considered at homeless charity Centrepoint as the organisation deals with the impact of the economic situation, it has emerged.

The charity held talks with union Unite this week over proposals including cutting pay, altering terms and conditions, and potential redundancies.

Matt Smith, regional industrial officer for Unite, said a 90-day consultation period has begun but added that the union’s members are not in dispute with the charity.

The consultation comes just a week after latest government figures revealed the number of homeless young people has risen by 15 per cent over the past year.

The number of 16- to 24-year-olds accepted as homeless by councils rose from 3,540 in the first quarter of 2010 to 4,060 during the first three months of this year — the biggest recorded year-on-year increase.
