Care leavers challenge Loughton over barriers to work

Children's minister Tim Loughton has been quizzed by care leavers to reveal what the government is doing to remove the barriers young care leavers face when moving into work, in the second of a series of meetings convened by CYP Now and the Care Leavers' Foundation.

As part of National Care Leavers’ Week in October CYP Now and the Care Leavers’ Foundation arranged a meeting between Loughton and a group of care leavers, where the children’s minister agreed to hold regular meetings with the group to hear their concerns and update them on government’s progress in tackling these problems.

The second meeting, held this week, again raised concerns about the huge variances across England in the quality of services for care leavers and young people voiced fears about an endemic lack of aspiration for care leavers among social workers.

Ashley Baptiste, a 20-year-old member of the group, said: "I think the effort demonstrated by the minister to consult with young people who have been in care and hear directly from them the issues concerning them is a big step in the right direction. I think generally in order for there to be progress in the lives of young people we have to demonstrate a positive and optimistic approach.
