
In March Cafcass processed 894 applications to take children into care - the highest number of applications received in any one month since Cafcass was set up in 2001.
The number of applications received between May to August were also the highest ever recorded by Cafcass for these individual months – with 2,600 applications over the three month period.
On average 814 applications were made to take children into care every month this year, compared to 754 in 2010, 710 in 2009 and 460 in 2008.
Cafcass chief executive Anthony Douglas argued that care applications continue to rise because of the "Baby Peter effect", despite three years having passed since the publicity surrounding the case.
