An end to over-18s being accommodated in the youth secure estate and moving management of youth custody to a newly created "department for children" are among reforms needed, according to the Alliance for Youth Justice (AYJ).

Their call has been made as latest government figures show there were 39 serious assaults in the youth secure estate per 100 children during the three months to September 2024.

This is a 51% increase in the rate during the same period the previous year when there were 25.9 incidents per 100 children.

There has also been an increase in the number of young victims, with 122 assaulted over the three months to September 2024, compared with 120 during the same period last year.
