Cameron urged to keep promise on disabled children

1 min read Health Disabled children and young people
Campaigners are calling on Prime Minister David Cameron to step in to protect the financial support families with disabled children currently receive, ahead of a debate on the Welfare Reform Bill in the House of Lords today.

Currently, low income families who claim disability living allowance on behalf of their child are entitled to a disability addition worth £53.62 each week. Families with a child in receipt of the high rate care component of the allowance also receive an additional £21 per week.

However, the Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM) campaign has warned that proposals in the Welfare Reform Bill will see benefit additions drop by more than 50 per cent.

The group, led by Contact a Family, the Council for Disabled Children, Mencap and the Special Educational Consortium  cited Cameron’s claims that he "would never do anything that would hurt disabled children".
