Call for teacher training to tackle homophobia

Teachers should receive training in order to address homophobic, biphobic and transphobic (HBT) bullying, a charity has said.

A report by charity Diversity Role Models has said government should introduce teacher training as part of a "whole-school approach” to tackling HBT bullying.

The charity found that of more than 800 pupils questioned as part of a survey, 64 per cent were aware of some lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) bullying at school. Just under a third said they considered their school to be not a very safe place to be openly gay, lesbian or bisexual.

“There is increasing public support against homophobia and HBT bullying, but prejudice is still happening in the UK,”  the report, Embracing Diversity and Ending Bullying, states.

But it added that: “Schools often lack the clarity and resources to effectively teach about LGBT equality and diversity and teachers lack training to effectively intervene and prevent HBT bullying.”
