
A study published by charity Play England evaluating a three-year street play project that supported parents to apply for regular road closures so children could play outside, found that greater time spent outside resulted in higher levels of physical activity and contributed to weight management in children.
However, there is evidence that children's time spent outside and associated independent mobility is declining.
As part of the study, children wearing accelerometers were tracked using GPS and the results of their movements showed that physical activity gained during street play made a significant contribution to daily physical activity targets for both boys and girls.
