He drew attention to his department’s research, which suggested that parents are very involved in their children’s education at Primary school. As they progress up the education system to Secondary school, however, parental involvement dwindles significantly.
Some parents said their child’s Secondary school felt like "a different world". Balls argued that it is this unfamiliarity with the education system that deters parents from engaging with schools: "There are still many parents who feel that it is difficult to get involved in their local schools, especially at secondary level. I want to keep up the momentum gained in primary schools where parents are far more likely to get involved."
