Birmingham young people produce sex education strategy

Young people in Birmingham have called for a rethink in the way sex education is delivered in the city, in a bid to reduce teen pregnancies.

Birmingham's UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) members, in collaboration with Birmingham City Council, investigated sex education in the city over two years, and produced a report, Education on Relationships and Sexual Health.

The report makes 16 recommendations including expansion of the city's health education service, specially qualified teachers and a multi-faith support group to be consulted on delivering the curriculum.

The report, based on evidence from professionals, parents and young people, suggested there is currently a lack of emphasis on sex and relationship education (SRE), particularly in the area of relationships and "resilience building", having the ability to make a right choice and sometimes say "no".
