BASW 'insulted' by suggestion social workers are anti-adoption

The government's new adoption tsar Martin Narey has come under fire from the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) after suggesting social workers are anti-adoption.

Earlier this week the former Barnardo’s chief called for responsibility for adoptions to be transferred to a national agency if the number and speed at which they take place does not significantly improve.

In a report commissioned by The Times newspaper, Narey also said information should be published on the number of adoptions finalised and the time taken to complete them to allow for comparison between local authorities.

But his recommendations have incensed BASW, which has refuted suggestions that social workers are "anti-adoption".

Nushra Mansuri, professional officer at BASW, said: "The idea that the social work profession is anti-adoption is ludicrous and insulting to highly skilled workers who work tirelessly, in the current climate of pay cuts and staff shortages, to ensure successful placements are achieved for children.
