BASW calls on government to protect social work budgets before education

1 min read Social Care
The new government should make cuts in education, health or policing before considering slashing social work budgets, Hilton Dawson, chief executive of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) has claimed.

Speaking at the BASW annual conference, Dawson told delegates that elements of education, health and policing budgets are too often treated as "sacred cows". Quangos should also be cut before social work, he said.

On the coalition government's Big Society plans to devolve more power to public sector workers, Dawson said the proposals should be "music to social workers' ears".

But he warned: "One very strong message we are sending out from the start is that well paid, well supported social work must be a fundamental part of a great society."

Dawson added that BASW is building a strong relationship with the new government, particularly the junior children's minister, Tim Loughton.
