Barnardo's highlights significant increase in demand for CSE support

1 min read
The number of people being supported by child sexual exploitation (CSE) services provided by Barnardo's has risen by more than a third.

Latest figures from the charity show there has been a 38 per cent increase in the number of children, young people, parents and carers its CSE services are supporting across the UK - from 2,486 in 2015/16 to 3,430 in 2016/17.

The increase follows several high profile CSE cases across the country, such as Operation Sanctuary in Newcastle, where the charity provided support to dozens of children who had been affected by abuse.

Barnardo's has said that it believes the increase is due to local authorities recognising the need to confront the problem of CSE. Barnardo's reports a rise in referrals to the charity from local authorities for children.

Javed Khan, chief executive of Barnardo's, said: "The report on Barnardo's impact shows a relentless and growing demand for our specialist services, and as a result we are now helping more vulnerable children and young people than ever before."

The charity said it is working with councils to help them to improve how they tackle CSE.

Earlier this year, a government report on progress being made in tackling CSE revealed a 24 per cent increase in child sexual abuse offences. In the study, police recorded 41,000 offences from March 2015/16, compared with 33,000 in the previous year.

The study estimated that five per cent of 11- to 17-year-olds had been sexually abused in England and Wales.
