The chair of the Association of Youth Offending Team Managers (AYM) made her claim as Napo, the trade union for family court and probation staff, estimated the service faces cuts of 25 per cent. It is predicting that this will lead to "significant" cuts to programmes.
"This is firstly because there will be a quarter fewer staff to run them – and it will mainly be experienced staff who will be made redundant – and secondly on cost grounds," a Napo statement read.
The Probation Service predominantly deals with adult offenders, although it is one of a number of partner organisations which fund YOTs in England and Wales, and sometimes provides staff. Small numbers of young offenders also take part in unpaid community punishment work, overseen by the service.
