A group of 20 councils have been involved in the trial, which is being run by the Yorkshire-based Fix Our Food campaign that involves academics at the universities of Leeds, Cranfield, York and Oxford.

While currently families must opt in by registering for free school meals, this trial sees families registered automatically if they are eligible, instead giving them the chance to opt out.

A further 40 councils are looking to join the trial.

In areas already taking part an additional 1,700 children have been registered for free school meals in County Durham, while in Wakefield an extra 1,200 children have been registered.
