Asylum-seeking families live in poverty

1 min read Social Care
Children's charity Barnardo's is calling on the government to do more to save children in asylum-seeking families from living in poverty.

The charity has carried out a study of asylum-seeking families from across the UK and estimates that more than 100,000 children could be caught up in a backlog of asylum applications.

Report author John Reacroft said: "Nobody knows how many children are in asylum-seeking families in the UK because the government has not counted them. We think 100,000 are caught up in the backlog and some have been here for years."

The report, Like Any Other Child?, published this week, shows many asylum-seeking families live in temporary accommodation with no idea how long they will stay there and their children's schooling disrupted each time they move.
