The NSPCC has recruited the leader of animal welfare charity the RSPCA to be its next chief executive.
Chris Sherwood has led the RSPCA for six years - Chris Sherwood/X

Chris Sherwood will join the child protection charity in January and replaces Peter Wanless, who announced in April he is to step down after 11 years leading the organisation.

Wanless will remain in post until the end of this year.

NSPCC chair Neil Berkett said that Sherwood, who was chief executive of relationship charity Relate prior to joining the RSPCA six years ago, has “an impressive track record in leading some of the UK’s best-known charities”.

Members of the NSPCC’s Young People’s Board for Change were involved in the interview process during Sherwood’s recruitment.

“I am thrilled to be joining the NSPCC,” said Sherwood.
