Agenda launched for children of prisoners

Youth Justice
A group of prison charities has come together to call on the government to do more to support the children of prisoners.

Action for Prisoners' Families, Clinks, the Prison Advice and Care Trust, and the Prison Reform Trust have published a joint Agenda for Action.

In it they call for action to ensure prisoners remain in contact with their family, to reduce the chances of them reoffending, and to minimise the impact on children.

They are also demanding that the government starts collecting reliable data on the impact that having a parent in prison has on a child.

Andy Keen-Downs, director of the Prison Advice and Care Trust, said: "Prisoners' children are the innocent hidden victims of crime, and are far more vulnerable than other children to becoming involved in crime later in life."
