Age-disputed children continue to be detained

Children are continuing to be held at Yarl's Wood and other adult immigration detention centres more than two years after the coalition government announced detention of under-18s would stop, latest statistics have shown.

New figures released by the Home Office show that two under-18s were held at Yarl’s Wood in Bedfordshire last month (June).

The establishment was controversially used to routinely hold children and families prior to an announcement by Nick Clegg in December 2010 that the practice would stop immediately.

But since then, including the two children held last month, a total of five under 18s have been held there.

Of the two young people held there last month, one was a 17-year-old and the other was between 12 and 16.

It brings the total held at adult establishments to 33 since the government’s pledge was made in December 2010.
