Academic achievement of traveller children plummets

Education
The academic achievement of young people from Irish Traveller and Gypsy or Roma backgrounds has fallen dramatically in the last five years.

Figures collated by the Bow Group think tank show the proportion of Irish Travellers getting five A* to C grades at GCSE fell by more than half in that time.

In 2003 41.6 per cent of Irish Travellers, and 23.2 per cent of Gypsy/Roma pupils were achieving the standard. But by 2007 this had fallen to 15.6 per cent and 14 per cent respectively.

Nearly a third of Irish Traveller pupils did not gain a single GCSE. The figures are worse for boys than girls, and for pupils that qualify for free school meals.

In 2005 no Irish Traveller boys eligible for free school meals got five GCSEs at grades A* to C.
