Funding Watch: The Freemasons' Grand Charity - youth opportunity grants

1 min read Youth Work
Established in 1980, the Freemasons' Grand Charity is a grant-making organisation funded by Freemasons and their families. The charity's youth opportunities grants are intended to help disadvantaged young people, usually between the ages of 16 and 25, in rural and urban areas.

How much is available? Two different forms of grants are available - minor and major. Minor grants of between £500 and £5,000 are available to smaller, nationwide charities whose annual income does not exceed about £1m. Grants of more than £5,000 are made only for a specific purpose and are generally made to larger, nationwide charities. These grants are usually between £10,000 and £25,000. Funding may be granted for up to three-year periods in certain circumstances where there is evidence of an ongoing need for support.

What will it fund? Minor grants can be used for core funding, which means that charities applying for cash do not have to specify a project. The money can be used for the general running or overhead costs of the charity. Major grants must be used for a specific project to help disadvantaged young people. It can be used to fund salary costs or other costs associated with delivering the project. Any requests for funding must include a detailed project plan, which outlines the project's budget, timetable, objectives, milestones and intended outcomes. Evidence of successful outcomes will need to be provided with applications for ongoing projects.

When is the deadline? The next deadline is 29 November, with applications being considered at a meeting being held in January. Deadlines for meetings due to be held next April, July and October are yet to be announced.
