Author Phil Robinson points out that public awareness and statistics about young homeless people tend to focus on sleeping rough. Research by Centrepoint, in partnership with the University of York and funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, found that at least 75,000 young people were homeless in the UK between 2006 and 2007. This figure, however, does not include the proportion of hidden homeless, which is extremely hard to measure.
Many of the young people Centrepoint supports have complex needs and require a tailored support package involving specialist services, which prevent repeat homelessness and help them to fulfil their potential. Unfortunately, there is very little literature that focuses on these areas, which is surprising considering the huge benefits this work brings to individuals and communities.
