What do you do?

I work closely with schools, youth clubs and community groups, training people to spread the anti-smoking message on both prevention and quitting. I have taken the Maudsley smoking cessation model and adapted it for young people. It's a mentoring and support programme that focuses on setting a quit date. We have piloted it and had a 50 per cent quit rate at four weeks, compared with a rate of about 20 per cent, which you might expect with adults.

How did you get into this job?

The 2004 Choosing Health white paper introduced the role of health trainer and I was part of a pilot scheme in Great Yarmouth. A young people's position came up in the South West Essex stop smoking team, and I went for that. I'm one of a few people in the UK with a focus on young people and smoking.
