This book examines how the children's care system works in England. It looks in detail at how children and young people enter and leave care, the different placements available and the outcomes of the "care experience" on children.
It goes beyond the descriptive by providing analysis of the possible cause and effects of outcomes. For instance, where placements have broken down the authors draw lessons for policy and practice. The influence of the various players involved in the care system is also analysed - from the young people themselves, to their families and social workers. It looks particularly at the roles of local authorities in determining policy and practice.
