This study has been put together from interviews with 54 young people aged nine to 23. Forty-four of them were from one local authority, which at the time of writing had 1,112 young asylum seekers registered as looked-after. In addition, 31 professionals and carers were interviewed, resulting in a study presented largely through the words of the young people themselves.
It is a useful introduction for anyone unfamiliar with the plight of young people seeking asylum in the UK, of whom only seven per cent were granted asylum outright in 2006, 22 per cent were refused, and 71 per cent were granted discretionary leave to remain that was to be reviewed as they approach the age of 18. Unsurprisingly, the report identifies anxiety over immigration status as the number one concern of most young people in this group.
