Still Here with Me is a collection of 30 experiences of the death of a parent, and it provides a valuable insight into the thoughts and feelings of bereaved children and young people. In their own words, they movingly describe what it is like to experience the death of a mother or father.
The book covers a range of circumstances, including children bereaved as babies, children who have lost both parents, bereavement because of suicide, situations where deaths have been sudden, deaths because of violence and anticipated deaths. Two mothers were killed by the children's fathers.
Common themes are acknowledgement, information, inclusion in decision-making and keeping memories alive. Contributors include a child who was only a year old when he saw his father die. Two years later, his mother's version of events was captured in writing by a child psychologist who read "the book about Daddy" at every visit at the boy's request.
